LM_NET is a discussion group open to school library media specialists worldwide, and to people involved with the school library media field. It is not for general librarians or educators. We want to keep the activity and discussion focused on school library media. But, LM_NET can be used by library media people for many different things- to ask for input, share ideas and information, link programs that are geographically remote, make contacts, etc.
Conversation on LM_NET should focus on the topics of interest to the school library media community, including the latest on school library media services, operations, and activities. It is a group for practitioners helping practitioners, sharing ideas, solving problems, telling each other about new publications and up-coming conferences, asking for assistance or information, and linking schools through their library media centers.

Subscribe to LM_NET   If you want to subscribe to LM_NET, first check our information on how to subscribe to LM_NET by e-mail. If you are able to process mail using your Web browser, you can subscribe to LM_NET right now.

Commercial Friends of LM_NET: We would like to recognize some companies that have been especially supportive of LM_NET, by sponsoring EL-Announce, as well as LM_NET Breakfasts and other events at regional and national gatherings of librarians. Please take a few minutes to visit these sites. They are so nice to LM_NET that we think you will like what they have to offer.

A "low-volume" option is available via LM_NET Select.  LM_NET Select is a compilation of LM_NET messages selected 3 times a week.  It includes selected Hits, Information Resources, and other good stuff that has been posted to LM_NET.

Who should use LM_NET Select?
First, all those folks who are just unable to handle the volume of LM_NET messages.  Now, that may not include most of you - because you are full-bore LM_NET users.  So, please help to get the word out to former LM_NETTERS who have unsubscribed or others interested in library media who never took the plunge.  PLEASE - share this service to them.
Second, you too might consider subscribing to LM_NET Select even if you get LM_NET.  It's a quick way to review the highlights of the listserver, in a timely fashion. Check out the EL-Announce with LM_NET Select Archives!
We offer LM_NET Select through EL-Announce (the listserv of number of informative announcements from the selected vendor supporters) because EL-Announce is able to provide some limited financial support to this project.
To subscribe and receive LM_NET Select, just go to this Web page, and join EL-Announce by filling in your e-mail address, etc. (name is optional):
   http://elann.biglist.com/el-announce/
You will then be added to the mailing list for EL-Announce, and you will receive LM_NET-Select along with a limited number of informative announcements from the selected vendor supporters of LM_NET!

LM_Net Daily Digest  If you would like to have the messages posted to LM_NET compiled into single messages, and sent to your mailbox once or more each day, you have that option. The LM_NET Digest option: (If more than 175 lines of messages are posted on a given day, another daily digest will be issued after that cutoff point.) To start/stop the LM_NET Digest option, send a mail message to: LISTSERV@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU with one of the following commands in the _body_ of the message:
To turn the digest on, type: SET LM_NET DIGEST
To turn the digest off, type: SET LM_NET NODIGEST

Subscribe to EL_Announce  As you know, we work very hard to keep LM_NET as "commercial-free" as possible. However, we don't want you to miss useful announcements from vendors-- particularly those messages about discounts, new products and specials. That's where our vendor affiliate, EL-Announce comes in. Its purpose is to provide a select forum for commercial messages of interest to those in the library media field. It is a read-only, moderated list server, with one or two announcements per day-- with no discussion. Your queries should go directly to a specific vendor (if you desire). See the EL-Announce Archives.  Check out the EL-Announce Web site.
To subscribe to EL-Announce, just go to the Website, and fill in your e-mail adress, etc

Etiquette on LM_NET
You might want to know about the manner of Network Etiquette ("Netiquette") on LM_NET, so that you can be sure to use your messages to the group in a wise and productive manner.

LM_NET Archives   Use this link to search the LM_NET Archives and several other listservs.

The LM_NET FAQ 1  and FAQ 2You might want to know about the answers to general Frequently Asked Questions on LM_NET, so that your messages to the group won't ask for what someone asked a day or week or so earlier.  That is FAQ 1.   FAQ 2 deals with maintenance of your LM_NET account, signing off, temporarily suspending your mail, restarting mail, changing email addresses and LM_NET.

LM_NET Member Directory   This section is continually under construction because names are added upon request.  Once your name is listed, please keep your information updated. For additions or corrections please Jim Neal

State, Province and Association Links  This is a listing of the library related links available in each state.    For additions or corrections please Jim Neal

Listserv Addresses  Where to look for the correct e-mail addresses for posting a message to LM_NET, or changing your settings (i.e., set NOMAIL, DIGEST). There are two very commonly used addresses, and it is important to know which one to use at the right time.

Keeping Your Mailbox Junk-Free  If you have received unwanted Internet junk mail, sometimes called "spam", you may want to consult one or two of the following resources, which offer some useful ways to deal with this problem:  SPAM-L FAQ or How to Get Rid of Junk Mail, Spam, and Telemarketers

Keeping Our LM_NET Member Mailboxes Junk-Free  A number of hoaxes circulate the Internet as fact. Some of them are alarming, some just silly, and most all of them very annoying and bothersome to deal with. This site does an excellent job of exposing. explaining and debunking those that are hoaxes. (See the ":Classic" section for the Craig Shergold postcard hoax, and the "Miscellaneous" section for the Good Times Virus hoax.)

LM_NET Librarian Links  Links to Web Pages of special interest to school library media professionals (i.e., Big Six, School Libraries and Librarians Web Pages, etc).

If you are interested in moderating groups like LM_NET, please read A Day in the Life of An Internet Discussion Group Moderator, based on an article appearing in the April 1996 Technology Connection magazine.
