TITLE:
High School Basic Skills. Georgia Student Assessment. Revised.
PUBLICATION_DATE:
1985
ABSTRACT:
This document acquaints teachers and curriculum directors with the reading, mathematics, and problem solving indicators assessed by the Georgia
Basic Skills Tests, initially given in grade 10. Students who fail initially
in grade 10 have at least five other opportunities to take the test and
must pass it in order to graduate. In reading, skill areas tested are:
(1) literal comprehension, the understanding of information explicitly
stated; (2) inferential comprehension, the understanding of material not
explicitly stated; and (3) problem solving, testing the students' skills
at locating, recognizing, interpreting, and evaluating information. In
mathematics, skills areas are: (1) concept development, the basic vocabulary
of mathematics and the relationships of numbers; (2) component operations,
actions using numbers; and (3) problem solving. For each objective,
assessment characteristics define the content required and sample questions
illustrate possible formats. All objectives are evaluated in academic,
everyday, and employment contexts. Passing scores for students entering
high school in 1985-86 are 307 in reading and 308 in mathematics. (SLD)
